What is BCC?

Bible Core Course is part of the College/Faculty of Christian Ministries of the University of the Nations based in Hawaii. Its purpose is to give a complete understanding of the inductive approach to Bible study.

Among many methods of Bible study, we can highlight at least two:

  • The deductive method of interpreting scripture is one in which the person approaches the text or book with a pre-conceived idea of the meaning of the text. In doing so, the student ends up reproducing what he has already read or heard from other sources.
  •  The inductive method of interpreting scripture (the method chosen by the BCC) is one in which the student approaches the scripture to discover all the particular aspects of the text. This starts with observations of the background and historical setting, as well as the setting in which the original text was written. By doing this, the student arrives at a main central idea.

More than an academic exercise, the BCC is the search for the truth of God is the Living Word – Jesus Christ.

Prerequisites

  • Successfully completed the DTS
  • Pay registration fee
  • Submit the student application form
  • Submit recommendation forms by the ministry leader or pastor.

This 12-week school runs twice a year starting in April and September.

Overview

The school has a duration of 12 weeks:

We will study Bible books that represent different literary forms, including New Testament epistles, Mark’s gospel, Revelation, historical books, and prophetic books. We will also cover general knowledge about the Old Testament, Hebrew poetry, homiletics, and expository preaching. We will also give attention to topics such as biblical culture, history, economics, politics, and geography.

The course is essentially a personal study and classes will be taught every week in the morning. The student must also complete 8 hours of work duty per week at the YWAM base (a requirement of the University of the Nations).

Materials needed for the study:

The student will receive a Bible and a handbook, as well as handouts or materials that the teachers give during the course at no extra cost.

Also, the student will need to have the following materials for personal use: notebook, wax crayons of different colors (suggestion for crayons: STAEDTLER 221nwp12 St Noris Club Wax Twister crayons), A4 paper, graph paper, ruler, pencil, sharpener, rubber, A4 size plastic pouches (for assignments), calculator, and Portuguese monolingual dictionary.

It is extremely important to have a personal computer or notebook. We suggest you bring it to class and use it during lectures and for personal work.

How Does the School Work?

The BCC works with the tutoring system. Each student will be accompanied by a tutor, who will guide their studies through the execution of assignments. All work will be evaluated by the tutor. The role of the tutor is to make each student reach the maximum of success in their study.

The student will learn to master the “tripod” of the school:

  • Observation: What the text says?
  • Interpretation: What the text meant to the listeners of that time?
  • Application: What the text means for today’s reader?

Purpose of the School

  • To equip the student to grow in relationship with God by providing a sound biblical foundation and encouraging the development of the character of Christ through an application.
  • To challenge the student to engage in unfulfilled missions in world evangelism.
  • To convey an understanding of YWAM, their core values, and call for action to the student.
  • To prepare the student for service in the Church and local communities.
